Peace BAR Festival 2015

Peace BAR Festival 2015

In commemoration of the 34th UN International Day of Peace, Kyung Hee University will hold the Peace BAR (spiritually Beautiful, materially Affluent, humanly Rewarding) Festival this September. The International Day of Peace was proposed by Kyung Hee University and the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), submitted by the Costa Rican government, and adopted in 1981 at the UN General Assembly.

The two-day event will begin on September 21st with a ceremony to commemorate the International Day of Peace, followed by a conferment of a posthumous honorary doctorate upon Václav Havel, the former president of the Czech Republic and a leader in the Velvet Revolution for democracy. The first day will end with a roundtable in which we examine the historical significance of Havel’s life and work. This event will serve to engender global awareness of our new responsibilities in politics and inspire us as world citizens.

On September 22nd, the second day, we will hold a special forum entitled “The Future of University, the Politics of the Future: Visions of What the World Can Be.” The forum will feature three present and former university presidents from Korea who will discuss the roles of academe and politics in our journey to the future.

In this uncertain era, characterized by growth and alienation, prosperity and pain, this event offers us a chance to reflect on the social potential of higher education. We invite you to join us at the Peace BAR Festival as we together reflect on the current state of civilization and strive to envision a better future for humanity.
