IAUP at the 9th Eurasia Higher Education Summit

The 9th Eurasia Higher Education Summit was held in Istanbul, Turkey, from February 27-29, 2024, bringing together approximately 2,000 attendees under the theme “Building Global Connections”.   IAUP President Dr. Fernando León-García delivered opening remarks, where he stressed the importance of transformational leadership in higher education, developing well rounded employable graduates, the challenges and opportunities in support of women’s leadership, the need for institutions to take the lead using and developing AI and technology effectively, going from competition to cooperation and collaboration, and moving universities to glocal multiversities.

In his participation in a panel on on leadership challenges and trends, alongside distinguished representatives from institutions in Brazil, Turkey, and the Philippines, Dr. León-Garcíanoted a trend of stagnation among university leaders, where many are inclined to maintain the status quo rather than embracing necessary changes for innovation and relevance. He emphasized that institutions must proactively reassess their approaches to ensure they remain adaptable and forward-thinking in today’s dynamic landscape.

The discussion also delved into the topic of internationalization, where Dr. León-García underscored the need for a more holistic approach beyond traditional student mobility, including initiatives such as internationalization at home, e-mobility, internationalization of the curriculum, and fostering widespread support for internationalization across all levels of the institution, among others.
