New report: Global Perspectives of College & University Leaders in the Post-Pandemic Era

The IAUP recently released its latest in-depth research report, “Global Perspectives of College & University Leaders in the Post-Pandemic Era,” which delves into the evolving leadership priorities among IAUP members in recent years, combining survey data and interviews conducted by Dr. Rachael Merola to provide insights into developments since the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as new priorities and challenges for the next 3 to 5 years.

Highlights of the report include the impact of COVID-19 on financial models and operations, showcasing lasting changes, adaptations, and resilience within institutions. It explores the strategic and operational changes leaders have implemented, efforts to globalize and expand institutional reach, the evolving student and academic experience, and new priorities and regional differences shaping the future of higher education.

Key findings signal that as IAUP members look to the future, they are on a path defined by agility, foresight, and a drive to enrich academic experiences while contributing to the global community.

The report underscores the crucial role of faculty development and support in institutional success, alongside a strong commitment to providing students with international exposure and cross-cultural competencies essential for a globalized workforce.

Institutions also emphasize sustainability, research impact, interdisciplinarity, and community well-being, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and adopting a student-centered approach to today’s challenges and advancements.

Finally, international partnerships and the embrace of digital technologies are also identified as high priorities, fostering an adaptive, innovative, and student-centered educational experience.

Based on a survey conducted from June to December 2023 with 60 IAUP member institutions and follow-up interviews with 30 institutional leaders, this report serves as a follow-up to the 2021 study, providing a current perspective on leadership trends and priorities.
